"The adoption of activism as a lifestyle rather than a medium for bringing about social change serves to alienate those who do not identify with its idiosyncratic culture.  The unspoken rules of what hairstyles, clothing, diet and lifestyle choices are and aren’t acceptable in the activist ghetto are major barriers to those who are interested in the same revolutionary aims but don’t share the lifestyle.

This results in a limbo situation for such people who cannot fit in.  Most end up giving up on a scene that they feel they can never be fully part of.

[...]

Aside from the obvious cultural bias in activist circles towards whiteness, the disproportionate dominance of student politics (as well as those who have come through the university system) means that those from working class backgrounds often feel a similar alienation from activism.  The intellectuals of the movement love to communicate in lengthy theses on this or that particular issue, often lacking direct connections to those on the front line."

I love most of this piece, though I find it annoying that it has the predictable anarcho/lefty tone that says those of us who care about the environment or animals are just being emotional and silly.

  3. I think you they are good quotes. I Just happened to stumble across your site when searching for more work from this author. I can relate to both. I think there are elements of what he describes in most anarchist movements around the world. I've been lucky to experience a few of them, and each has it's particular problems. The is no grand narrative of shitness - i totally agree with your comment around the predictable anarcho/lefty tone.

It's the kind of tone which turns people away, the unhealthy - deflating kind of tone.

A realisation that people are motivated for different reasons and become politicised through vastly different means is something that i think he needs to work on. For some, it's a sudden realisation that their place within the class structure leaves them - and those they grew up with - at a particular disadvantage, for others - it's the thought that a world where the eradication capitalist constraints on production could lead to the liberation of all scientific knowledge. This in turn would divert those efforts devoted to the construction of useless shit that fat people would want to buy - to a concentration on things such as - sustainable farming - finding a cure for aids - or just building cheap ass fucking water filtration which can be quickly distributed globally (some are also see a world where space travel is possible - hey what's wrong with dreaming? - life would be fucking boring without it). Either one - you present as different people - with different life trajectories - each holding in your head the fucked up shit you've learnt and reproduce. We have to accept fault in people and focus on the real enemy - develop methods of combating informal hierarchical structures from forming while appreciation that not everyone walks into a movement with a working fucking knowledge of Marx, Bakunin, Prudon and so forth and so on. (besides which they are fucking boring anyways)

The point is that there is no point setting up a situation where you're just antagonistic - esp in situation like he has written about.

That cop - is a dog - (Woof woof) - and reading that he would be laughing his ass off. I don't want to entirely discount it. Cos he raises some valid points. The anarcho scene does overly focuses on identity politics and struggles as a result to try and define itself.

We can collectively put forward a set of rules (written or not) - and without expressly or actually exclude anyone - just establish your rules - publish them (or develop them unofficially) and people will exclude themselves. Including cops!

    Peace

  4. As an anarcho-lefty person who cares deeply about both, I don't like your suggestion that anarcho-lefty people don't care about the environment or not exploiting animals. Read Murray Bookchin.

Comment policy for Feminisnt: I do not publish blatant insults and trolling. You must use a name/handle other than anonymous or asdf because I am tired of giving space to detractors who are too lazy to pick a fake handle and too scared to use a real one. I no longer publish comments bitching at me about how feminism is the greatest thing ever. And I may not publish your comment if I have already addressed that specific issue several times already. Read my responses to other comments before asking a new question. Finally, if your comment hinges on an obvious logical fallacy, I might not publish that, either, except to make fun of you. All new commentors have their first comment held for moderation. Commenting on my blog and taking up space on my server is a privilege, not a right.
